UNDERSTANDING THE CERTIFICATION

In this era of heightened cyber awareness and increasing security demands, the big concern is that navigation equipment can be at risk of interference, or that it might affect other equipment. DNV now recognises that Furuno have implemented protections that promote security hygiene and the added password protections will mean that malicious actors cannot use this equipment as a vector to compromise other systems, and it is more strongly protected against direct attack. 

APPLICABILITY: NEWBUILDS, OR RETROFITS?

While these regulations are aimed at newbuilds and designed to protect systems into the future, they also have meaning for companies looking to establish cybersecurity on board existing and legacy vessels. Retrofitting existing vessels with the relevant equipment or applying a simple software update via an authorised Furuno dealer during a scheduled port call, utilising an authorised Furuno dealer can bring the vessel compliant with these standards, and protect the ship, and give owners peace of mind.
