Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) require precise synchronization to ensure accurate maritime navigation. Chart harmonization is critical for maintaining consistent navigational information across multiple display units.

Understanding ECDIS Chart Synchronization

When multiple ECDIS units are installed on a vessel, they must maintain identical chart information to prevent navigation errors. Synchronization ensures all units display the same geographical data, routes, and safety information.

Identifying Synchronization Issues

  1. Access the "CHARTS" tab in your ECDIS interface (Top Menu Bar)
  2. Select “SYSTEM” (Left Menu Bar)
  3. Check "SYNC CONFIG" and verify all units are grouped correctly
  4. Check "SYNC STATUS" and verify current harmonization state

Sync Status Scenarios

  • Normal Status: "None" displayed across all ECDIS units
  • Active Synchronization: One unit shows "must send", others show "must receive"
  • Problematic Status: "Must send" or "must receive" on multiple units indicates synchronization failure

Manual Synchronization Steps

  1. Reset sync status on all ECDIS units (CHARTS > SYSTEM > SYNC STATUS > RESET SYNC STATUS)
  2. Restart equipment on each unit
  3. Initiate manual synchronization from the unit with the latest chart data
  4. Confirm synchronization completes across all networked units

Best Practices

  • Regularly verify chart grouping configurations
  • Monitor sync status during navigation
  • Perform manual sync if automatic processes fail
  • Maintain consistent network configurations between units
